The Australian Welsh Male Voice Choir will be touring the UK during September and October, together with their guest soprano Ayșe Göknur Shanal. We have the honour of joining them for the very first Concert of their tour.
The Australian Welsh Male Voice Choir is based in the Melbourne area and was formed in 1974. In 1983 the choir was invited to join the Association of Welsh Choirs and became the first choir outside Wales to be accorded this honour. The following year the choir became the first choir outside Wales to sing at the “1,000 Voice Festival” at the Royal Albert Hall in London. The Choir has made further visits to the UK, but this is their first time in Scotland. Last year they enjoyed a very successful tour of Taiwan, Hong Kong and China and appearances at the Sydney Opera House on two occasions and performances on ABC television are also part of the Choir’s rich history.
Brisbane born soprano Ayse Göknur Shanal is one of Australia’s most versatile classical singers. As well as many prestigious Australian venues – including Sydney Opera House – she has performed at venues across Europe, the USA, Japan and Turkey. As a Dame Joan Sutherland Scholar, she studied at London’s prestigious Royal College of Music and was an adjunct member of the Lindemann Young Artist Development Program at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
We are also delighted that Bruce Jamieson has agreed to be Compère for the evening and that the net Concert proceeds are to be donated to Alzheimer Scotland.
